needs refund help!

My grandad sadly passed away recently. My dad is devastated and is organising the funeral. My dad recently purchased a christmas gift (pyjamas) for my grandad before he died. I would like to return the gift for my dad as he does not need the added stress of venturing out to marks and spencer two weeks before christmas to return his dead dads pyjamas. so heres what i need the help with!

My dad paid by debit card, is there ayway i can get a refund without my dad or his debit card being there with me?

  • Legally speaking unfortunately not, although I am sure if you ring the store in advance and discuss the situation I would have thought they would be accomodating.

The other option is to take them back without a receipt and accept a credit slip.

Without proof of purchase this may not be an option, especially since the OP did not purchase them.

It's there normal policy to give a credit slip, but if the goods have ben reduced they will give them to the lower value. Without a receipt M&S will not know who the original purchaser was.

My point entirely - or whether they were purchased at all!

Give them a ring OP to save yourself a journey - they are only human after all.

Or look on their web site and see if the PJ's are the same price, if they are, I'm sure you could easliy spend a gift token on something else.

Can you take the receipt and credit card?

They do not normally do an ID check or body search to someone returning stuff, especially if it is in an as new/saleable condition.
You may need the pin no though.

I had a similar issue not long ago and rang the customer service dept beforehand, who rang the shop concerned, explained and then rang me back to tell me who to ask for when I went in. Credit note issued no problem.
If its simply a case of not wanting the items there to remind you all, perhaps drop them at a charity shop/shelter, but I know that M&S isn't cheap...
Sorry for your loss and well done for looking after your Dad.
It aint over til I've done singing....
