you may need to change the default sound from the laptop speakers to the HDMI port

right click on the volume icon (next to the clock) select 'playback devices' right click on the one that is HDMI and select 'set default' (if there is more than one HDMI try both) you will need to switch it back to laptop speakes when you are done using the HDMI port.

that should work for windows 7 other OS may be slightly different but the same principle

Done that, I am using Vista, I forgot to mention that all other sounds - music etc will play through the TV, it's just the DVD where the sound will not play, the sound from the laptop is awful and nowhere near adequate for enjoyment of a film. I am using a newish laptop with full multi media functions. There must be an answer.

What software are you using to play the DVDs? There may be an option within the software to control the output device, overriding the setting in Windows. I know this is possible in VLC.
  • On my desktop the sound setting is in the BIOS, Not adjustable in the windows settings for the HDMI port.

Who needs VCR,DVD,HDD recorders when you can plug a PC in and do it all.

Not all hdmi ports allow sound out of them (dependant on graphics card)

Everting with the exception of DVD's play. So the HDMI port must play sounds its just the DVD's which give the problem.

Apreciar, you need to let us know what software you are using to play the DVD? There'll be a setting in here, or maybe just in Vista's sound settings, for where to output the DVD sound to.

I am using Windows Media Player but cannot find any way to change the settings there. It's crazy, everything except a DVD will play with sound.

OK, well here's a trick, since I don't use WMP - go and download VLC media player, and try playing a DVD with it - get back to us with the results...
