It's a fair point that you make.
If for example someone is covered to drive other vehicles provided they do not own them, if they pay for and buy a new vehicle and attempt to drive it home with the V5 officially stating they do not own it and they are pulled over by the police do they have any chance?
They would have some hope, common sense would have to prevail though.0 -

They'd have very little chance of not being done for driving without insurance (as the legal owner of the car the DOC extension would not apply - regardless of the status of the V5).
If they tried to use the V5 to show it as being someone else's car they could be done for taking without consent.
Not a risk I'd advise taking.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

What if the owner on the V5 indicated they gave their consent?0 -
Quinn Insurance whom I am with got back to me this morning and advised that I would have been covered to drive this vehicle home as I would not have been at that stage the registered owner, however it was better to be safe than sorry.0

The V5 does not state who owns the car, just who the registered keeper is.
I can't imagine they could, given that legally they don't own the car anymore!
Say you bought a car from me, and drove it away. I've cancelled my insurance on it and you haven't yet bought any and are going to try and use your DOC extension to cover it.
You get stopped by the police. "Is this your car?", they ask. If you say "yes" then you're done for no insurance. If you say "no" they will phone the registered keeper (me) and ask if you have permission to have the car. Why would I say that you have my permission to drive the car? You don't need my permission as you own the car, and that's exactly what I'd tell the police.
If you had no receipt and no proof of buying the car, I could say that it's still my car and you have not got permission to drive it and you'd be done for TWOC.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
