Setting up speakers for my desk top

Hi Folks

I have just bought a new set of external speakers for my desk top.
I have connected them up correctly (I think), but instead of giving 'normal' sound, it is making a crackling noise.

Can you please advice how I can rectify this?

Is there something I need to do on the actual computer in order to correct the sound?

Try them with a known good source, portable radio, ipod or the like.

There are a number of jack sockets on a desktop, make sure you are in the output, and not microphone.

speakers should be in the green socket.

I had them in the wrong socket. I've changed them to the correct one now.

aye, it's a bit annoying when somebody starts a thread, 'Urgent need help', gets a few good replies, then doesn't even put up a thanks, job done or whatever.

I like to see a happy ending.
