Stir up Sunday

Apologies if this is something I should know, but can anyone tell me when Stir up Sunday is? I have been telling DD2 that we will make the Christmas cake and pudding on Stir up Sunday, but when I google it I get a couple of different dates - one said last Sunday in October, the other says Sunday before Advent. Can anyone help?

It seems to be the last Sunday before Advent, which by my reckoning puts it around the end of November. If I recall correctly churches have 4 big candles for Advent, 1 for each Sunday before Christmas.

    Hi all :)

This will be a good thread for our new Christmas board so I'll move it across. I'll be wandering over there myself shortly - aiming to make my first ever Christmas cake :)

We are having our traditional family 'stirring of the Chrissie pud' tomorrow! We always get together near Bonfire night and have fireworks etc and all stir in our silver coins and make our wishes. Love it!

    Have fun.
  • Our Stir Up Sunday has always been the last Sunday of the autumn half term. Arrange these things to suit yourself.

  • I think it's the 26th November (last sunday before advent) this year - it's traditionally the day to make your pudding which is what we do. My mum invites all the family over to her house that day and we all have a stir of the pudding and make a wish!

It is definitely the last Sunday before Advent Sunday, which as HopeElizzy says is the 26th of November this year (the last Sunday in advent being Christmas Eve this year).

It is traditionally the day you 'stir up' your pudding, but it's called so because of the collect read on that Sunday in church (C of E)

I've never heard of Stir Up Sunday before!

    What's it's origins? Curious now!
