New Laptop

Hi,

I have got my mum a new laptop for Christmas and was wondering if there is a preferred way of installing software. It requires MS office and an anti virus to be installed. I'm thinking of using avast (free version) and installing this after ms office.

Any tips?

Thank you.

one tip would be to use https://www.filehippo.com as its a central source of all the really good *free* software.

As well as avast, you could use malwarebytes, and open office (which is free), if you haven't bought office yet.

    Also consider backups.

Avast is an excellent choice and there are different versions of Office -- at varying cost /////

  • Another good tip would to be uninstall any demo software like norton before trying to install any new AV software.

  • Thanks for all the replies. The scenario has now changed though!

Some of you may be aware from my previous posts that my dad has a habit of somehow slowing down their pc. This led to my mum becoming frustrated and in turn me as well. To resolve this I decided to get my mum a laptop for her own use. Only she has now decided that dad can share it too. Argghhh - now I'll have 2 things to try and sort out, well with your help anyway!

If the laptop is going to be for them both, what is the best way to set it up? If using different accounts, how do you set up Skype so that regardless which account is logged on, they appear to be on line? With their PC, I made my dad the administrator. My mum is completely pc illiterate. Do I make my dad the administrator again?

Starting to wish I hadn't bothered with the laptop now. :(

No one should ever log on with administrative privileges. Very bad practice and against Microsoft advice.

Why is it that when you install the product and set it up using the default settings it creates the administrator account for what seems to be the main user?
