Travel insurance - any ideas??

I went on holiday recently to New Zealand and had a stop over in LA on the way home. Owing to a 24 hour delay (because the runway lights were not working), we did not get our overnight stop over. The travel insurance company are refusing to pay (because the flight that was delayed was not a flight to the UK) and the airline have also confirmed that they are not responsible for the costs of lost overnight stays.

The additional stop over cost a lot extra and it does not seem fair that no-one will foot the bill. Does anyone have any ideas about who else I can try and claim from?

It seems ridiculous that we had what we thought was a fully comprehensive insurance policy and yet scerarios like this aren't covered.

Was your delayed flight part of a single ticket number itineary from the UK?
Which airline was operating the aircraft that was delayed?

It was part of a package that we booked with Trailfinders and Air New Zealand were the airline. Any ideas would be gratefully received!
