Band D for Studio flat?

I'm renting a studio flat. Everything is basically in one room, separate bathroom, cgh. Can you imagine how surprised I was when I called to register for my council tax and heard that it is band D and I have to pay 145 pounds per month????

At that time I didn't know that there are only 2 flats of 4 registered for paying council tax. After a while I found out about VOA and I rised an appeal against my band. Now 2 months passed by and I don't know if I have any chance for positive decision. They said they will contact me. Do you know how long it takes and should I expect any visits?

    it's based on valuation.

    Where do you live?

How much is the flat worth?
My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day's work for an honest day's pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support the police - Margaret Thatcher.

koszalek opalek, you've done the right thing checking the VOA website. I would suggest you ring your local council, and simply ask where they are up to on your appeal.

These people will never be in a rush to give you your hard-earned cash back  remember, it's in your interest to chase them, and the quicker you do, the quicker you're going to get your answer !
  • I check at VOA and It looks like that I pay for the whole ground floor - my studio and the flat next to mine.

I live in Haringey, London. I used to live in the same council a year ago and I was renting a studio - I was paying only 93 pounds per month!

I rang my council and they put me incontact with the valuation company they use. I explained why I thought I was in the wrong band. Then at some point came an looked around my property (didn't knock / ask to see inside etc). I then got a letter with their findings and they authorised everything with the council.
Total time was about two months.

Give the council a ring and ask have they made a decission yet.

You have to keep on them, I'm keep telling them I live alone, & they never respond. I'm going to have to go in in person at some point.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.
  • Lil Dee,

thanks for your advice I am gonna call them definitely ! The only thing I am wondering is that people from my council should be more interested to solve this matter quickly because they're loosing the money that people next door should owe them (obviousely they don't pay any c.tax). I am sorry to be so honest :(((

And once again you're right - the last time I waited 4 months for returning overpaid c.tax!

    good luck with it!

Maybe- just maybe you may have uncovered an issue where your studio, was part of a ground floor flat, and it hasnt been regiastered as 2 seperate addresses.

In any case thats not your fault is it, get back what you deserve, and if all else fails just hassle hassle hassle.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
