16.5 GB HDD in a 2004 laptop- does this sound right?

I looked at the HDD in our old laptop and it says the HDD is 16.5 GB. This is a time Laptop bought in 2004 does this sound right for the age of the machine?

I am so happy time went bust as this is the naffist computer ever. The image on the screen jumps, keyboard does not work too good, windows update crashes the thing. It is only fit for the bin.

Where does it say 16.5Gb? If you're getting it from Windows, it may be a 20Gb drive with a small recovery partition & that could be feasable but, as you imply, a little tight.

it could be partioned, does it have another drive (e.g. d:) that's not the cd drive?
If you have xp(this is true for profesional at least) you can look in control panel -> administrative tools -> Computer Management in there you should see storage -> disk management. That will tell you more about your drives, a logical drive is a partioned drive if I remember correctly.

By all means look, but I'd resist the urge to touch unless your feeling confident.

It does have a partiton. It looks like 16.5 is all I get to store files on it. Like I say, it is only fit for the knackers yard and I only use it to run office now and again.

They do that so you can put windows on a partition and put all your documents, files, music etc on a separate partition. Good way of organising the machine. You can try and check the proper size of the drive through control panel, administrative tools, computer management (if you've got xp). Then select disk managament and it will show all the drives. How many drives are being shown in windows explorer?
