  • I assumed happy holidays was just a way of wishing well during the festive season, so probably more accurate than saying merry Christmas when it's not Christmas day? I have never said it and haven't actually heard anyone say it so I could be wrong.

Ban Xmas and keep the holidays!

    Even better
  • As 'Merry Christmas' is a Christian greeting I *think* the term 'Happy Holidays' was coined to include those of other faiths.
  • We always celebrate Winter Solstice first in our house (which pre-dates Christmas as the main mid-winter festivity... most of our Christmas traditions originate from Solstice/Yule traditions, without which Christmas wouldn't exist, so it irks me a bit when people are ignorant to this. This is our heritage!) and I'm happy for people to say whatever they want. Does it really matter?! It's good to be inclusive and recognise that our neighbours from other cultures are celebrating too.

I agree with what you say ffotogirl but Yes! it does matter!

I am all for everyone being included and celebrating any festivals in the way they wish but, what I object to is the way that the Christian faith is being pushed aside to accomodate this.

We are so afraid of hurting anyones feelings that we are allowing our own heritage and traditions to be obliterated.

I am not particularly religious myself but the more we allow our traditions and values to be watered down in the name of "inclusion" then this country will have no identity at all.

Sorry for the rant and if I have offended anyone - wasn't meant that way!
    Merry Christmas!!!!
  • i like Happy Holidays

its only Christmas for one day

happy holidays makes it a much broader greeting to me

I think the debate on "who Christmas belongs to" has been an age old argument that will rage for ever

even christians agree Jesus couldnt have been born in December if everything surrounding his birth is to be believed

so, wishing everyone Happy holidays takes out any misunderstanding in this ridiculous day of PCness

i wish EVERYONE a peaceful time over the holiday season, not just christians

But the original pagan beliefs & festivities were pushed aside in the same way to accomodate the invading Christians and their calendar. And not just Christmas/Yule/Solstice, they gave new Christian meaning to many of the festivals our Pagan ancestors were already partying away to! Although I guess in those days we didn't really have the freedom to object. Our traditions & identity are already a mish-mash of other cultures and I think it's fantastic that these days we're free to celebrate as a multicultural society without persecution. I honestly don't know why people get so worked up over it as if we've all been Christian since day one and acknowledging anything other than this imposes a threat on the British way of life! Happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Merry Yule, Nadolig Llawen... it's all good to me :)
  • merry xmas and a happy new year is good for me here in glasgow the council call it the winterfest for fear of offending other faiths i couldnt give a toss if it offends other faiths its christmas not winterfest

I totally agree ffotogirl, and I want to thank you for expressing such a tolerant attitude to differing beliefs and religions, in this season that is supposed to show peace and goodwill to all mankind.
