Changing registration NI to UK

Hi

I am looking at purchasing a car which has come over from Northern Ireland; therefore has a NI number plate on.

Does anyone know how i would go about changing the plate to a standard UK one and how much the cost would be, as this would all impact if the car is worth buying or not as don't want any hidden costs.

Thanks

Why not just register it here and keep the same plate?

    "Changing registration NI to UK"...

Erm...Northern Ireland is in the UK. There's no need to change the plates.

    From Direct.Gov...
Vehicles moving between GB and Northern Ireland (NI)

Vehicles registered in NI that move to GB are no longer classed as being imported to GB.

These vehicles can keep their NI plates and tax disc, or they can request a GB registration plate.

The vehicle registration certificate Northern Ireland (V5CNI) should be used to aid registration in GB and applications should be made at a DVLA local office.

Are you sure that it is NI registered?, lot's of cars have private plates that originated in NI, but are registered here.

I suppose if the plate actually says NI on it under the EU symbol, then it would have to be replaced regardless of if you keep the number or not.

If it doesn't have the EU/NI symbol then just keep the existing registration to save buying new plates.

If it is actually NI registered then definitely change it so you don't look like yet another !!!! who buys a tacky NI plate :rotfl:

Actual cost of the plastic plates themselves is minimal.
  • as another poster said, NI is in the UK so you don't need to re-register the car.

the only thing you might need to watch out for, and advise the MOT garage of, is that they may need to manually enter the details when you get it mot-ed as sometimes the ni/england systems aren't in sync. if they say 'we can't do it, you're not on the system' they are lying.

some people have a good reason not to change it, particularly people actually from NI! i'm a NI person living in england and I don't want the hassle of getting my car targetted when i visit home. if it makes me look like a '!!!!' when i'm living here so be it.
