Hi,
I'm looking to get a new PC after having my current one for almost seven years!
The main use of my PC now is purely for entertainment reasons - losts of songs on iTunes, loats of games, pictures form my digital camera, videos etc. Of course I use the internet and also do a fair bit of a work on it too, but priority would be entertainment.
How much should I be looking to spend for a decent PC with a fast processor and lots of ram? (I take it it's RAM that allows more programs, songs etc?)
Are there any places that I should try?
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Have a look on the technie board for advice, I've been looking around and set my heart on one from Comet
Acer T180 DC
Have been told it's a good package.0 -
I'm in a similar position. I'm looking at spending £400-450 on a Dell offer or getting someone at work to build me one for a similar price.Happy chappy0

Hi nickswfc,
I'll move your thread over to the techie board to see if you can get more help over there.

I just bought a new computer from a local shop. AMD Sempron 2800 chipset512ram 160gb hard drive dvd rw £215. He transfered the OS from my old computer or that would have cost another £55. That is using my old keyboard mouse and monitor.
Anything goes wrong in the first 12 month he guarantees to have it fixed within 24 hours
Misco are offering a new PC with a 40gb HD for £169 + OS
There are plenty great deals about if you look around. I have had bad experiences with PC World and Tiny so prefer to deal with someone local.0 -

For the uses you specify 'decent' would be a fairly basic system. You could pick something up for sub £500.
RAM is Random Access Memory. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run concurrently. From your inference, you are probably referring to Hard Disk size, measured (currently) in Gb. This is where your programs are installed, your documents stored etc. Nearly all machines now come with plenty of HD space, look for at least 80Gb with most systems.0 -

If the applications are CPU or Hard disk intensive theres not much point in having multiple applications open.
Your computer is as good as its weakest link. ie. CPU, Hard Drive speed, RAM and possibly graphics card should be considered together.0 -
Earlier this week I bought this from Dell for a family member who want to do similar to you:
e-value: D10e05
Key specs: 2.6Gig Dual Core Processor / 160G HD / 1024RAM / 19" Screen / dvd writer / 256mb nVidia graphics / + media card reader
Actual final value with VAT and shipping : £438
If you link through quidco you get 4.5% cashback as well!
Think its gone up by £50 now but Dell prices go up and down almost daily.0 -
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I got a good Acer one from Comet- £400 inc flat widescreen monitor, pentium 4 processor, 160gb storage, etc which I think was excellent value. They don't have the same one on there now but that may change again who knows. Just wanted to say really that it seems to be a great machine, even though not a well known brand name. Have had no probs and had it since August.0
