Titanium saute pan - Woll or something else

Looking to buy a 28cm titanium saute pan for Christmas and looking for recommendations. They are quite expensive (£70-£90) so I am trying to buy something decent as have had some mixed experiences with non stick pans over the years. Have done quite a bit or research and am trying to decide among the following four:

-Woll - saw them at the Good Food Show and was really impressed.

- SKK - Delia Smith recommends them

- Gastrolux Biotan - Made in Denmark, Recommended by Heart Foundation (for what it's worth)

- Procook Titanium

Am currently leaning towards the Gastrolux but happy to be swayed :D Are all these titanium products the same or is there a difference in quality? All the above pans have a similiar look so I have a suspicion they are all made in the same factory!

Le Creuset not one of my options plus they don't make titanium pans as far as I know......
  • I have no advice but there are two more brands you could consider...

I have been lusting after some good quality non stick pans for many years but have never taken the plunge as like you I have found it hard to decide and they are so expensive. I have read numerous reviews which have confused me even more - some folks have had problems with pans because apparently if you use oil it can react with the surface of the pan. Cannot recall which brand of pan this was, might have been more than one. Frankly the more I have read, the more confused I have become hence why I still have not bought!

I am hoping someone else will come along who has some good advice and would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has had these expensive pans for a long time to hear how they stand up to long term use.

    Sorry I haven`t been much help :o
  • Thanks for reply. Not heard of Run before, will look into it a bit more. Swiss diamond was another brand I was looking at but then googled it and found some unflattering reviews on the american Amazon site.

Gastrolux is apparently used by Hilton Hotels and P+O Cruises plus they recently won a test in a German magazine. Woll on the other hand are now endorsed by Gordon Ramsay......

Like you say hoping someone will offer some first hand experience of using a titanium pan.....
  • Have to say i saw a Woll demo at an Ideal home show and it was very impressive - the man melted a plastic bag in the pan and tipped it out and it didnt stick at all. He also poured sugar in, let it caramalise and again no sticking. As it came with a lifetime guarantee I bought one and yes it was pricey but I thought well if it lasts a lifetime then its worth it in the long run.
But earlier this year I was less impressed. I looked after the pan, never used metal implements etc, but the non stick was definitely failing - even a fried egg welded itself to the pan, so I sent it back and asked for a refund. Weeks passed I heard nothing. Wrote again, sent them proof of postage (big mistake - I should have kept that) No reply again. Finally sent a recorded letter. Nothing. Phoned them and they said there was nothing they could do as they had not received the pan or any of my letters. They told me I should claim from the post office as good lost in post.
Frankly I do not believe them, but what can I do now? Need advice here please!

The best frying pan I have ever owned is a 28cm unbranded non stick pan I bought in Aldi about 2 years ago.

It is solid and heavy and shows no sign of wear even after regular use for a few years.

    I paid £9.99 for it.

A similar size Tefal pan costing more is far lighter and is now showing signs of wear even though I use it less than the Aldi pan.

Unfortunately Aldi only occasionally have pans like that in stock.

SKK are good, but I found that the non-stick does wear off the frying pans after a while (even without ever using metal utensils). You do need to season them regularly also. The non-stick on the saucepans held up much better. There was an SKK outlet shop in North London, but I don't know whether it's still open. Unfortunately, I lost the address when my old PC went kaput.

I actually replaced my SKK frying pan with a Tefal and it's performed much better. No sign of any loss of non-stickiness (did I just make up that word?) after over 6 months of very frequent use.

I have a similiar pan I bought in Aldi about 6 years ago which has now reached the end of it's life, hence my original question. Maybe I was being overly optimistic, 6 years is probably pretty good for a non stickpan....

Aldi have some more in now @ £14.99 and I'm off to buy one tomorrow night :D It's coated with Du Pont Platinum Plus which I believe is their best non stick coating so should hopefully be ok.

The titanium pans sound great but if they cost at least £60 I might just be better off getting an Aldi one for £15 and replacing it every few years (here's hoping)
