Advice on buying a first car (2nd hand)

Would a cheap car at around the £1k mark last 3 years (minimum)? That's the bit we're not sure about, I don't want to be continously looking for another car.
Of course.
If it's been serviced and maintained it'll go on for a long time. Then again no car is ultra reliable
Brand new cars cars can fail 2 miles up the road on day one, and yet you still see 20 year old cars still going strong today
Just make sure whatever you buy has been serviced reguarly, had it's major bit's changed i.e cambelt etc
Diesels are notoriously more reliable than petrols (my personal view) but generally cost a little more to serviceIf Adam and Eve were created first

Have you had a quote for insurance yet?
If not I'd get that first.0 -
Spend about £2k and get a japanese car like a yaris 1.3 or a good diesel car. I got a 2002 1.3 yaris for £1900 a couple of months ago through ebay.0

Out 1997 peugeot 106 cost £475 three years ago, it's done about 45000 miles since then, with no trouble.0

True
People often overlook older models in the presumption that reliablity would be an issue
Like i said, any car can fail, Be it on day one or 20 years time. What matters is how well it's been looked after. If Adam and Eve were created first

Just get the best you can find for 1K. It is only going to be used as a second car after all. If it breaks down one day, get the bus to work or use the family car and get your partner to take the bus. Even a new car can break down.
Too many people about these days that think a car older than 3 years old is no good any more.

Corsa B. Even if they go wrong, they're buttons to fix. Take your time, be fussy and wait for the right one. £1000 should get a really good one .
Ok, I put a sump on mines (oil, filter change and sump supplied and fitted by someone £110) but in the recent bad weather here, I was never stuck, was out in the worst of the weather and have used it to jump various 3-8 year old vehicles (4 wheel drives included) that chucked it in the -17 temps the other day.0
