the hd cable that has arrived with my 360 has a switch tv/hd , one end goes into the xbox the other end has 3 phono pins , that can plug directly into the tv or via a scart

It seems that you are describing a component HD cable here. It needs a component input on the TV and not the HDMI (small socket). If your TV does not have component inputs then you'll need a DVI HD cable plus a DVI to HDMI convertor to be able t connect it to the TV.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Don't think there is one yet. There's a d-Sub (VGA) cable. Could you put a VGA to DVI convertor onto that, and then a DVI to HDMI convertor on that??

So what is the hdmi port for ? ... will i get a true hd picture if i select hd on the xbox cable and plug it into the phono ports (not through a scart)

HDMI is a type of copy protection to prevent the copying from the HDMI source. Phono ports - are you talking about the cable which has red, green, blue (component HD) as well as the yellow (composite) and red and white for stereo sound? You won't get a HD picture using the Yellow plug with or without the scart adaptor. Too bad your tv doesn't have component inputs - no inputs on the front?

hi ive installed it now .... wthout the yellow pin , as instructed by the xbox website

the xbox is accessed by selecting component , so i presume this is correct , i havnt used a scart but the switch is selected to hd , and it appears very clear .

is this not a hd picture , ms instructions say it is but i was convinced i had to go through the hdmi port
