My own building insurance v. communal building

Hi there,
I own a flat within a 6 flatted building. A main water burst inside the building causing water damage to the walls and under the stairs within the communal area. Clearly the cost is divided amongst all 6 owners.
But how should I go about claiming to my own insurers and to others?
Thanks.

The maintenance or communal fee you pay should include the Buildings Insurance. If there is a management company dealing with the flats, you should find out from them. You should have been given a copy of the Insurance policy and have details of who to contact in the event of a claim.
The management company or whoever is responsible for the flats should have the responsibllity for sorting out the claim. If you don't know anything about this, speak to other flat owners. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Thanks for your reply.
There is no management company involved. My own insurers were useless at giving me advice. I am reading between the lines, that I should just report it to my own insurance company and let them take charge of the matter which includes contacting other flat owners and their insurers?

Claims like this can be a nightmare.
If there isn't a block policy and you just have your own policy, make a claim for your own damage (if there is any) and then let your insurers sort it out.Happy to provide impartial general insurance advice free of charge!0
