Buying on ebay - how long for Paypal to clear?

Sorry if this is a bit of a basic query but I've searched for info on ebay, Paypal and MSE and not found an answer yet. I bought an item from ebay - auction ended 15 Oct and I paid with my credit card via Paypal on 17 Oct. The payment is showing as "confirmed" and "paid" in my ebay. I still haven't received the item and when I contacted the seller, he said I'd paid by "echeque" and payment hadn't cleared yet. Now I usually receive things much faster than this, and so had always assumed that the Paypal clears in a couple of days at the most.

I don't want to give neg feedback if there's just been a misunderstanding between us, as I realise most people are not trying to scam you! How long does Paypal clearing take? It's not an expensive item either but of course I would like to receive it!

Many thanks if you can answer this,

Regards,

Downsizing

E-cheques can take up to 10 days to clear

    From the PayPal site:

    What is an eCheque?

An eCheque is an electronic funds transfer that withdraws money directly from your bank account. It's just like writing a cheque, only it is done electronically. When you send money with an eCheque, the transaction will be held as pending for seven to nine working days, until the electronic funds transfer has cleared your bank.

If you inadvertently paid with an echeque, it means there has been a problem using your card - has it been replaced? Are the expiry details current?

Echeques DO take forever to clear... 14 days and upwards in the worst cases.

My dad had this problem the other day with a couple of purchases. Seems his funding source got automatically switched from card to e-cheque without him realising. Not sure why, but it sure caused a lot of frustration!
  • I've had two echeques in the last few weeks (having never had one before in two years) and both buyers were unaware they had paid by echeque - which took about 10 days to clear.

Check your Paypal account again. I think that if you had paid by echeque by mistake it will show in your account as uncleared. Or am I mistaken???
    I  this site!!!
  • I definitely paid by Paypal and have received my email receipt from them, showing it's been paid by my Mastercard as usual - I've NEVER used echeques!

No idea what's going on - checked card exp date and have emailed seller to make sure he hasn't confused me with another buyer. Oh well - I'll give it till the other side of the weekend before I contact him again.

Many thanks for all your input,

That's happened to me too - I still have no idea why. Nothing unusual showed on the screen when I paid. The seller still left positive feeback but mentioned that the e-cheque took 10 days to clear.

e-cheque will show in both buyer and seller account as uncleared so you need to double check then contact them back. I have a ebay shop and last month a few items were still showing as unpaid when the buyers payment was not by e-cheque so it was ebay that was messing it up, when I checked my paypal account it was paid normally and I had to appologise to the buyers! You may want to ask the seller to re-check his paypal account.
