Overdrafts - a cracker from Halifax

I opened a Halifax Reward account just over a year ago, and was using it as my second account mainly to get the fiver a month.

Recently I decided to use it as my main account and switch all my direct debits to it, so I used their switching service. They very kindly gave me a £1,000 fee-free overdraft for 90 days to cover the switching period (which I didn't need and haven't used). Previously I had no agreed overdraft limit.

Got a letter yesterday :

"The fee-free overdraft we gave you when you switched your account to us will end on 23rd December 2010. Your overdraft limit will remain as £2,600.00. As from this date the fees and charges set out in the table below will start to apply to your account if you choose to use your overdraft facility."

Where on earth have they got £2,600 from? It doesn't remain there, it was never there in the first place!

  • Based on your own internal score with Halifax and the fact no bad issues with a CRA they use I would say they are very happy with you as a customer.
Take it as you never know when some of that overdraft may be needed. It won't cost you anything if you don't use it.

The management of your account means they are happy to extend your overdraft - it may have been at £2,600 for a few months and this may well be the maximum o/d permitted on your account. Ous actual o/d is a few hundred quid, but I know the max on our account is almost 5 figures.
  • Slightly off topic, but I have a Barclaycard with £15K limit, but when they stopped their 'points', I took out a BA Amex so as to get airmiles. I was rather miffed they would only give me £3K, and after a year, eventually persuaded them to go up to £4.4K.

Imagine my surprise, therefore, literally a couple of days after this, I started to receive three 'bogus' credit cards - all 'accepted' - in the post using my name and address, but without any knowledge of my correct main bank, date of birth, or mother's maiden name. One of these was American Express, and they had granted 'me' a limit of £7K!
