Back up - unsure about warning message

My daughters (Lenovo N200 / Vista) laptop is playing up and from a previous post on here I was advised to use the "Rescue and Recovery" facility on the Lenovo machines to restore the hard drive to factory settings.

As all data and files will be erased i have attempted the "Rescue Files" option offered and transferred the whole C drive to a remote hard drive however during the process I get the warning message shown below,

"Unable to copy file: C:\system volume information\system restore\FRstaging\windows\bthsevsdp.dat. access is denied"

Can anyone advise if its ok to continue with restoring the hard drive to factory settings via the lenovo estore and Recovery facility??

Just want to be sure.... not the most computer literate person about. Would appreciate some guidance in case I am deleting more than i should and rendering the laptop useless and loose all my "great Dad" points before Xmas.:D

Thanks in advance.

So your copying c drive to another drive, then wiping c drive and starting afresh?

If so it should be fine to continue, that file is in a restore point which doesnt matter

  • You can ignore that warning as it relates to a system restore point which you wont require as your doing a full backup.

    Thanks,
I am doing this because the PC is stuck in a start up loop... Windows problem I am told?
I "believe" by doing this the PC will revert to how we purchased it... then need to re load protection systems and can transfer MY Docs, I tunes etc back to the PC?
Hopefully we will be back in business??

Am i on the right lines here??

As said... not the best with PC's and have taken advice in good faith from post's on here previously.

    Thanks for the advice.

however you backup, make sure it's all there and accessible before you wipe the drive, you might want to try this

  • If you are trying to do a factory restore, have a look here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70803

    Hope it helps

Those last 2 posts came in after I did the factory retore which has sorted out the windows issue i had.... Will read them in a mo.

    However!

For some reason i have lost microsoft office which i had thought would reload with the vista package as it was there on initial start up. Obviously not. I replaced the MS applications from the back up folder but still not working. Copied accross from the All Programs folder.

I have not replaced all the folders back into the PC at moment.

As it was a factory install with Lenovo Vista premium package I cant use the microsoft re-install as i dont have the MS number!

Bit lost at the moment - any further help would be very welcome. My daughters homework is being done on my PC at present! Want my PC back ;)

How should i replace the back up files on the remote drive back onto the PC.
    Off to read the links
