Oven doesn't heat up - UPDATE: Fitted a new element and something blew!

Before I give up and get a professional in, I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to fix this.
Since we moved in, our electric oven has not worked properly. The grill, the light and the fan all work so it is getting power.
If you put it on the oven setting the fan and light both come on but it just doesn't warm up.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Pete

How old is the oven? Some people will shoot me down for saying this but it might be worth replacing it. Our built in oven stopped working last year and we went to B&Q and bought a basic one for less than £200 which OH fitted himself very easily.
We knew the oven was really old (and probably not very energy efficient) so it seemed to make sense to replace it.0 -

Happened to me a few months ago , I panicked.
But it was the clock / timer that has to be reset when we have a powercut. But being a mere male . kitchen is under the control of the woman in charge.0 -
it sounds like ur element has gone.
This happened to my oven and i was panicking about the cost of fixing it.
I went online and looked into fixing it myself. I bought a new element from Ebay and fitted it myself!! it only cost £15. It took 10 mins to replace and the oven works fine.
The local repair man was quoting me £30 call out charge before he even looked at it.
Hope this helps.0 -
as above. a faulty element and the fan not working are the two most common problems.
cheap and simple to repair in most cases. ebay is very good for cheap spares.Get some gorm.0 -
Thanks guys, having done some Googling, it does look like the element is the most likely suspect. Unfortunately it would seem I have to remove the oven and unscrew from the rear to replace it, which may mean rebuilding my kitchen!!0

i doubt it very much.
ovens are normally held in by a few screws on the front panel outside edge. after you open the oven door.
the oven back panel is simple enough to remove.Get some gorm.0 -
I hope so! I've ordered a new element so I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for all your help!

The oven will be the last thing to have gone in, the units will already have been built up.
Open the oven you should see 4 screws, one in each corner.
When i did the element in mine, i put the kitchen table hard up to the unit to drop the oven onto as we pulled it out.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I find the Black and Decker work mate the right height also. Its also easy to get round to all sides.0 -
we have a low built in oven. a kitchen step/stool (the wife is 4ft 10) was about the right height to balance it on.Get some gorm.0
