We had a Lidl frozen one last year for around £10 and it was very good. Shall probably do the same this year.
  • I got a fresh crown from Lidl last year and it was by far the best for taste and price. Guests commented that it was the best turkey they had ever had.
The crown had a simple little sensor in it that popped up when the turkey was cooked.

In previous years I have bought from Tesco, Sainsburys and M&S. Lidl again for me this year.

As it will be for Xmas, I bought frozen reindeer from Lidl. IMO turkey is way over-rated or my frozen turkey choice/ cooking is rubbish!
This year I will be eating venison, reindeer, springbok and perhaps a decent ham.
I find goose too greasy, duck too tough, turkey too boring and chicken too everyday.
I will buy reduced price chilled turkey if I see it on Xmas Eve, but only because I need to be on a high protein diet!:)
I do NOT eat sprouts either.
  • Free range is all well and good if you can afford the extra, but many people cannot, so please stop guilt tripping your ethics onto people, ethics are a luxury that some simply cannot afford these days

    ...*sighs*
  • We got ours from Iceland last year and it was lovely :]

If you are going to buy a turkey, please buy a free range one.

If we all did that there wouldn't be enough to go round.

Turkeys aren't like tins of beans that can be stock piled for when demand goes up.

Turkey farmers grow just enough turkeys for the demand they are expecting at xmas. If the demand suddenly shoots up, there's nothing they can do about it. They only have a certain amount of turkeys and can't just "get more", it takes months to grow them.
  • But if everyone did buy a free range one - demand would force more farmers to produce free range ones for next year. So in a few years most would be free range.

I was in my local M & S recently and unusually just before closing time (6pm) and found a 1.4 kg free range butter basted turkey breast reduced to £8 from £22.99. I was really tempted but worried if it smelled bad, I wouldn't be able to return it. It was sitting in unappetising pink juice (blood and baste). Anyway I put it in and out of my basket 3 times and at the last 'the store is closing' tannoy, popped it in my basket and bought it. Got it home, opened it, and it smelled as fresh as a daisy. I rinsed it wiped it, chucked away the butter and now its frozen awaiting Christmas Day when its moment of glory will come. Our M&S usually reduces that days date stuff from about 2.30.
Still virtually alcohol free since 4/1/15. (10 Xmas/ New Year/Birthday drinks)
It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound in weight. Target 13 lbs weight loss. 18.5lbs lost 2nd May - 28 September.
  • Had the Iceland one today - was lovely and moist. Would recommend for hassle-free Christmas Dinner with plenty left over to use in the next few days...

  • Not had ours yet but highly recommended I hear is the
turkey butterfly (no bone in) from Makro- we got 5kg one for
£12- they do their reductions at the end of the day. Are in the
    cold chiller part :)
