I have to cut back this year from the M&S crown. Has anyone had a really delicious turkey that was relatively cheap. I know that the frozen ones are cheapest. Can anyone recommend anything good?

  • not sure but I am going to avoid the frozen ones and go for a smaller fresh one instead. IMO the frozen ones are a bit watery and I would rather have less of the 'good' stuff! I'll let you know if I see any but I holdng out for lidl.

think that you might struggle as its a contradiction in terms.

Although I usually splash out on a M&S boneless breast joint a couple of years ago I bought an Aldi frozen crown as it was just for boxing day, ant it was lovely!

Ditto! I will be doing the same this year again.:D
  • the iceland turkey crowns are good value and quite tasty!
  • It depends on how much you're willing to pay, and whether you really want fresh over frozen.

I once bought a turkey from Iceland that tasted really good, however the following year I bought the same one again and it really wasn't good. It was watery and I had to cook it for an extra 90 minutes on top of the recommended cooking time. Even then it was still quite soggy.

The past few years I have bought boneless turkey crowns from my local butcher. I buy two medium ones (one for Christmas, and then I freeze the other for New Year). The medium ones are really rather big and will easily serve 10 people (there are six of us eating it but we use the cold cuts for Boxing Day). The small boneless crown easily serves 6-8 people.

I pay roughly £21 per crown each year and I start saving with my butcher in September so that my crowns are already paid for and then I usually have some money left over to buy some nice joints of beef or pork.

If you don't mind frozen, then it's worth looking out for the half price deals in Tesco. The Norfolk Bronze is very good and when half price you can usually get a big one for around £14.

Good luck on your search - I'm sure you'll find something, but do check with your local butcher what sizes and prices he does. You may be surprised, and you'll be supporting local businesses too!

I've also gone for a 2.5kg frozen crown from Iceland for £15. Not up to wrestling with a whole turkey this year and the simple shove in the oven suits me. It does have added water with the chicken stock but I'm not too keen on dry breast (!) in any case. Having our Christmas Dinner tomorrow - will report back.

I agree with you there, my butcher supplies free range turkeys and I really have found that it makes a difference to the taste. They are bigger, meatier and more flavoursome.

No, you just completely misunderstood the title. The OP isn't looking for "Value" range turkey, but rather good quality turkeys that are good value in terms of price.

Free range is all well and good if you can afford the extra, but many people cannot, so please stop guilt tripping your ethics onto people, ethics are a luxury that some simply cannot afford these days.
