I have looked at some threads but cant see a specific answer for this one.
I have virgin broadband cable and want to go wireless. I was reading that for virgin users its best to use a router which does MAC address spoofing (its what I read I dont really understand all of it) but which of the cheaper end (sub £40) routers might do this. I just want to keep things easy for me to install.
thanks

Dont know the tech details but i had a netgear router which was okay, when i upgraded to 50mb with Virgin they gave me a free D-Link router, which has been great very simple to setup and no problems with any of my computers hooked upto it unlike the netgear,
I believe virgin are giving you these free if your a customer depending on stock so could be worth phoning them up and seeing0 -
thanks. I did phone virgin up but they said I had to buy one if I wanted one unless I wanted to upgrade but they were about £60 or so. will have a look at netgear ones0

We have Virgin broadband and we had a Netgear router for a few years with no problems at all, very simple to install and reliable. Just recently we have swapped. We needed to buy a new wireless adapter and we found a bundle in Comet, a Linksys wireless router and adapter, for £30. It was simpler than simple to install, very pleased with it..."Your life is what your thoughts make it"

Are you nearly out of contract?
Could be worthwhile telling them your leaving them because your going to go to BT/o2 etc. as they are going to give you a free router?0 -
The thing to watch if you buy one is to make sure it says it's a cable router as an ADSL router will not work.
Check the prices but I'm pretty sure that you can get N wireless routers for arond the same price as the older G standard - worth getting for future proofing even if your current kit isn't N as it will still be compatible.
You needn't worry about MAC spoofing as it simply isn't needed for it to work just fine. I'm not sure why it was recommended other than if you change the MAC you'll get a fresh IP address so probably used by people to fool hosting systems or get around bans from sites based on IP.0 -

You altered the router MAC to that of the PC, so fooling the modem, but allowing multiple connections via the router.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
thank you everyone-especially about the MAC spoofing. I will have a look at those recommended.
happy christmas everyone if I dont post again0 -

Yep, back in the day you had to login to ntl: to get provisioned to a specific MAC address then clone that to the router. FWIW I use a D-Link DIR-655 on Virgin and it's been rock-steady.0 -
Forgot to add that I used VM cable and a basic wired RP614 for 3+yrs from 2007, used with many different machines and OSs.
It worked flawlessly, and was easy to set up Port Forwarding etc.
Much clearer and intuitive than my new O2 Thomson.Move along, nothing to see.0
