If it isn't it's typical of the public sector and the waste that goes on,no wonder there's no money left, weren't there any suitable candidates in the London area.
Not a wind up. It was for their graduate scheme and they did the same for about 20 other applicants (we had been shortlisted down from about 2000 I believe). It was a day long interview. Also bare in mind that the successful applicant would have been expected to relocate at their expense.
I didn't get the job btw, haha :-)0 -

?? Most grad schemes are limited to very few people (up to ten a year) and will have 20 to 40 at assessment stage. That's, say, 40 x £200 at the most - and many grads won't need the overnight stay. £5000-8000 is a lot of money, but it's a miniscule amount in the whole budget. A hell of a lot more than that is wasted on admin and duplication every year.
Public sector companies are competing for the best candidates in each graduation year, and when the private sector can offer MUCH better salaries, bonuses and benefits, you have to pay to get the best people TO you! Most public sector grad schemes are based in London, and many grads, especially those in Scotland, the North or South West can't afford the very expensive train travel and the overnight stay for those distances, especially if they have three, four, five, six assessment centres to attend.
If all the private companies will pay for the travel and overnight stays (which they will), then far fewer grads will apply to the public sector if it's another expense to them. Also, paying those expenses ensures the candidates will attend and not pull out at the last minute (which is much more costly than the train fare and overnight stay!).
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
It used to be standard practice to pay for travelling expenses for interviews.....
It used to be standard practice to send either an offer of an interview or a letter of rejection. My son has spent hours filling out application forms for many NMW jobs and only 4 Companies, the Post Office, Tesco, Asda and Halfords had the decency to reply.0
