I also agree that it depends on the circumstances. A small local company, with applications from local people is highly unlikely to offer to pay expenses.

Very large private organisations, recruiting at a management or senior level taking applications from across the country is much more likely.

My old company would pay for senior post interview expenses, as well as expenses for those travelling to attend our graduate training scheme interviews and assessment days. Other posts, no!

I had an interview for the DWP in central London. They paid my travel from Newcastle & a hotel for the night :-)

That has to be a wind up surely

If it isn't it's typical of the public sector and the waste that goes on,no wonder there's no money left, weren't there any suitable candidates in the London area.

If you're on JSA then they pay for interview travel costs (if more than a certain distance) so I guess most employers now would assume that someone unemployed can claim from the govt and someone already employed could afford it!
I used to ask for my expenses if travelling a long distance but even when they said yes found that the hassle of trying to sort it out afterwards could often be more trouble than it was worth (although if I had not got the job did not mind hassling their accounts department) so now wouldn't ask unless i'd had to shell out a lot, but i would always ask first not just send in demand for payment like the guy the OP was talking about! I suppose if you've already been rejected it wouldn't matter but what if they were deciding whether to offer to you but that put them off?
  • I'd only consider it cheeky because of the manner in which he 'asked', and the fact that he doesn't appear to have offered to send you the receipts for said travel expenses!

There have been occasional times over the years when I've been shortlisted, yet at interview I'm well aware that this has only been an equal opps exercise, they know very well they have an internal candidate in mind - either someone who has been doing the job or someone who knows someone etc etc. I've also been on an interview panel where we did exactly that too. It's infuriating when you have wasted time/money (or annual leave) to attend.

The Open University and our local NHS hospital are quite famous for it, particularly the former.
  • It's standard practice for my employer and its immediate competitors to pay travel expenses for interviews. I'm not sure if the smaller companies within the same profession also pay expenses as standard, perhaps not.

If not automatically told I could claim back expenses, I would probably ask HR to send me a claim form (they deal with the admin side of things with interviews and aren't responsible for the decision as to whom to hire - no fear of influencing the outcome).

There's no way I would send in a letter asking for my travel expenses back without first checking this was in line with the company's policy!
  • Got to admire this guy for his cheek
just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you

I work in HR and often influence the outcome of recruitment, if the manager is not sure they will get us to weigh up the pros and cons of each candidate, that kind of thing -as well as sending out forms - never underestimate the power of HR!
