You only have one income? I appreciate you have just lost your job but is there a reason your partner cannot work?DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Hi there, I think you need to do your SOA with your financial position as it stands now. I know you are going to be receiving benefits etc but until they start coming in, then you need to have a clear picture of whats going on at the moment.
I know you are panicking and that's totally understandable. We are all here to help and support.
For now I would concentrate on the things you can try to change, ie electricity and gas costs, car insurance, etc. It may not feel like much in the grand scheme of things but it all helps. £75 p mth for car ins is VERY high, I pay £28.
Your road tax is therefore only £10 per month so you can reduce your monthly outgoings by £110 straight away.
I'm not experienced enough to tell you not to pay your unsecured loans etc, but if it was me and it was a choice to pay something to my mortgage or to my unsecured borrowings, I know what I woud choose. The priority bills need to come first and that includes mort and council tax.
May I ask, are you in this predicament due to job loss? Do you have any redundancy at all? Could your partner get a job in the meantime?

Terry,
I've just realised you started a different thread re this on 2/12/2010, I apologise if I've repeated the advice others have already given.

Hi,
My partner is unable to work as she is disabled and was claiming incapacity benefit but is now on income support due to appealing the decision by ATOS the benefits in the SOA includes both our benefits. My main job loss was due to redundancy a few months ago and all the money has been spent and I took another job in another field by fabricating my CV and in the end I got caught out as I was unable to do the job and was forced to resign after just a few weeks.0 -
OK... so you say she is unable to work due to being disabled - please don't take this the wrong way, I'm genuinely not having a pop - can she not even do a part time job? working from home? I obviously don't know what her disability is, but does she have skills that could help you earn even a few hundred more a month?
Right now - every little will help...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

The council tax are waiting for my p45 from my previous employer and JSA are waiting for a copy of my wifes passport despite me having provided several times to the jobcentre and via post. I have emailed my MP a few days ago so I am still waiting.I have £1000 of overdraft left to use shall I withdraw the cash as the unsecured loan is with them too?
Not sure about withdrawing the cash. But in terms of waiting for the benefits to come through and them making a mess of everything, take your wifes passport down to the office and get them to make a copy and fax it off to the claim office. That way they get it quicker and you will get a print off stating that you brought it in and its been faxed, so if they then say they need another copy you can tell them you have the proof that they've already had it.I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.0 -
Whilst I understand your concern re loosing your house please do not over worry at this stage - mortgage lenders are not that quick to reposses your house - you have written to them explaining your circumstances that you are waiting on benefits and you are doing everything you can to chase the benefits up.
I'm fairly sure they would need to go to court first and get a court order - which you could then appeal , then the court would give you time to leave anyway, then you would refuse to leave, then the lender would have to physically evict you - and all because you are late with one months mortgage? this is unlikely as it will cost them a lot of time and effort and think of the publicity it would generate if they took this approach to genuien people that had fallen on hard times - hardly a responsible attitude to lending is it?
People on the bankruptcy board wait months to have their houses repossessed even months after they have stoppped paying the mortgage and want to give up the house.
Do get some additional help on this from the CAB, National Debtline (see their website) or Shelter to confirm this though.
