Santander cards / Debenhams

I am getting seriously angry with Santander cards : my Mother had a Debenham's card which she hardly ever used, but was paying into by DD every month. I realised that there was a credit of £123.23 on it ( on which Santander were earning interest @ 30.6% APR through lending to other borrowers) and asked that this money be returned to her. I also cancelled the DD.

I have since called Santander cards every 2 weeks through September, October & November, to be fobbed off each time with " this is being dealt with". They finally sent a letter dated 03.12.10 confirming that account had been closed and that cheque was being sent under seperate cover ( why?). I called today ( 10.12.10) to be told that printing, signing and sending out said cheque could take 14 days from the date of the letter, i.e. 03.12.10 ! Told them this was disgraceful.

I might point out that similar situations existed with her accounts with John Lewis ( £330) and M & S ( £189.60) - both of these companies closed the account at first request and all sums reimbursed to my Mother by end of October.

I know that I can't do much to get the cheque out of Santander Cards any faster, but I certainly can tell anyone who will listen what an awful financial establishment they are!

Santander is probably one of the worst banking institutions in this country. I've never used a branch over seas for obvious reasons and i don't bank with them here either.

I've read countless stories on their poor customer service, ethics etc.

Santander - Wouldn't touch.. Barge pole

Santander are abominable. My mother's savings were in Abbey National, who'd been taken over by Santander by the time I got probate. It took months and months to get anywhere with them. They were rude and arrogant, they lost papers.... They hide behind call centres, always.

I have a Debenham's card that became a Santander one. I was horrified when I realised (when they started debiting my current account!). I just don't use it, now.
  • Exactly the same thing is happening with me and my Debenhams card! They'll happily sign you up for the DD quick as a flash, but trying to cancel it feels like climbing Everest or something, sick of it!
