X box 360 repair?

Now I am retired I seem to spend a lot of time fixing things!
Grandson has an Xbox 360 with a faulty disc reader, cleaned it but still it does not load the games. Is it worth buying another reader, they seem expensive? Perhaps I could buy a broken Xbox with the "ring of death" on Ebay, they seem quite cheap? Or does anyone have a quick fix for the problem?

As stated in another thread, the drive is paired to the console. As you're obviously not put off by taking things to bits, you need to find a 360 with the same make/model drive as yours. You need to remove the laser from it and the sub-board the laser is attached to and swap them into your grandsons.

£84 for Microsoft to repair it.

Actually rather than replacing the laser you could try turning up the power on it. This won't last forever, but it's free and quick to do. You will however need a multimeter, and a very small flathead screwdriver.

I used a guide I found online for how to do this the first time, it's pretty straightforward but be careful to take note of the reading you get BEFORE you adjust anything, and don't turn the resistance down too much as that will simply result in the laser wearing out faster. There are multiple drive models so the insides of your grandson's may look slightly different from the guide, but you should be able to work it out.
