moving home

Looking for some advice.
I'm moving to a new house and the current owner uses a mixture of BT and AOL for the phoen (and SKY for Digital TV).
There is no Virgin Media fibre optic there, so I can get the phone and BB there, but not cable.

I was thinking of getting 02 Broadband, but app I need a phone line.

My question is:

Do I get 02 to supply the phone line as well?
Do I get a BT line?
Are there any better (as in MSE) ideas that I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

  • O2 can install the phone line, yes. An O2 line is a "BT line".

O2 "LLU" is well regarded. On the other hand O2 "Access" (no LLU presence) is considered poor.

So when you order, you'll want to be sure that you have an LLU connection.

If you can't have that, use someone else.

To discover whether O2 has an LLU presence at that exchange use the www.samknows.com website - availability checker - put the postcode (or if you know the current phone number at that place, use that) in and then look down the right hand side.

If the current occupier is using BT and AOL, the there is already an ADSL line installed, so why do you think you need a new line?

I pay my line rental and phone charges to IDNet and my internet to BE. It seems the cheapest option for me.

My error - I don't think I need a new line. I should have phrased it better.
"Which supplier should I use as Virgin (who I am with at my current home) cannot provide the whole package at the new home"

I've had a look at the site and on entering the details, it appears that 02 does not have LLU Operator Presence.

Looks like it is going to have to be someone else ....

  • What LLU suppliers do you have available? (Just paste the list in here if you want someone to give you some tips, though do exclude anything personal like your postcode or phone number)

There is a link in my post, but the results are here:

LLU operator presence What is this?
    AOL: Enabled
    O2 / Be: Not available
    C&W / Bulldog: Enabled
    Edge Telecom: Not available
    Entanet: Not available
    Lumison: Not available
    NewNet: Not available
    Node4: Not available
    Orange: Enabled as of 13/11/2009
    Pipex: Not available
Sky / Easynet: Enabled as of 05/07/2010
    Smallworld: Not available
    TalkTalk (CPW): Enabled
    Tiscali: Not available
    Tiscali TV: Not available
    WB Internet: Not available
    Zen Internet: Not available

Not exactly as if I am spoilt for choice ....

Additionally, I did a check with BT on BB speed and got this:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 512Kbps. However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 1.5Mbps. Similar lines predicted with this speed have achieved ADSL Max line speeds in the range of 1 to 2.5Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 1.5Mbps. Similar lines predicted with this speed have achieved ADSL2+ line speed in the range of 1.5 to 4Mbps.

The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

    Thank you for your interest.

Judging by that online response from the BT website, your new place is a long way from the exchange and ADSL broadband speed (whoever you get it from - you appear to have a choice of BT and 5 LLU providers) will be dire.

After having 10mb Virgin cable, you are going to be very disappointed.

    Sorry.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

On a so-called "long line", which yours appears to be, you may benefit from a LLU service which doesn't implement something a little technical called profiling which can serve to cap the meagre speed available and with low speeds, every little bit can make a difference.

And from the list you posted - if you were planning on having Sky, then Sky's LLU broadband has quite a good reputation.

If you were not planning on having Sky TV you can still have Sky broadband, and Sky can activate the line as well.

Would recommend you avoid O2 as it isn't "LLU". The non LLU and LLU service cannot be compared.

    Thanks guys.
I am getting ready for dissapointment.
edit: contacted SKY and they reckon it is 1Mb ... (sob)
also, they can provide evening and w';end calls and line rental for £11.25pcm - which is marginally more than BT, btu it does then allow me to have unl BB for £7.50pcm - so that works for me.

Now I guess I should look to see what the best deal is ....
Onto another area of the forum I guess.

    Many thanks for the help.
