MSE News: Npower to hike energy prices in January

  • I know energy firms have been increasing their prices constantly for years but i have just noticed that my energy firm from April this year until November have also increased the calorific value 3 times , and considering i am on a capped offer it will be interesting to hear what they say when i call them next week to find out why . So check your bills when you recieve them .
  • I don't believe the company has anything to do with the calorific value. I believe this is measured at various stages through the distribution network. I stand to be corrected though as its just a vague bit of info I've picked up.

Hi, HELP! I have literally just switched to N Power as i compared and they were cheapest (was with EDF before), will the price go up now?? Do i cancel or what? All this switching stuff has always confused me, hence why i've never switched before! Hope someone can help, thanks!
  • Depends what tariff you are on SOL20 isn't changing, fixed rate tariffs aren't changing. Depends what you signed up to.

"The big 6 should be investigated by the competition commission and not Ofgem because they simply are not competing."

    1. So why do we have the cheapest prices in Europe? 2. Nobody complains when petrol stations change prices at virtually the same time and see it as a sign that they are involved in a competitive market.

    PS

"As for the switching sites, these vultures make their money by getting you to change supplier and guess who pays these companies a fat fee of about £50
    oh yes
    the energy providers.
No wonder they can give you a rotten bottle of bubbly for changing. "

    1. An oft-quoted 'fact', usually by industry insiders. Could you give us a detailed breakdown on how these figures are calculated?

    2. Who's claiming the oil/fuel industry is competitive? If it wasn't for the supermarkets getting involved in the selling of the stuff the industry would have the same level of collusion (some say it passive, of course, it may well be) as the gas and electric industry.

I've changed to Sign Online 20, so that's ok is it?
    Thank you!!
  • That is correct SOL20 is unaffected by this change. No help to me on SOL17 :(

No I don't have the figures, this info was provided by others on here when I asked. Feel free to look at my past posts to find it.

My point was not that the industry does no wrong, just that I think the public and media are being a bit lazy going we are being ripped off whilst making no attempt at comparison with elsewhere.

You can check each tariff here

    http://www.npower.com/Home/Price-change/How-does-this-affect-you/index.htm

Had my twice yearly bill a week ago with a recalculation of the direct debit based on the next 6 months not 12 ! I was told that the Energy Regulator have advised that they must reassess all direct debit accounts on a 6 monthly basis rather than 12 monthly to stop customers building up debits on their accounts.

They can however if requested recalculate this over 12 months.

NPower have a baffling 38 different tariffs, how exactly is this supposed to allow fair competition and price transparency for customers?

Do not believe what you see with the latest NPower price increases . Although they state that the average is 5% , my electricity will be increased by 18% meaning a rise of £6 per month . I am on the Online 18 tariff which I switched to in June . When I complained that these prices were not transparent I was told that it depended on where I lived and which tariff I was on . This may be true but who is checking that the average is only 5% ? Are there people who are not receiving increases to be able to average this out ? One thing in their favour is that they filled in a complaints form while I waited !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:
  • I too am on SOL18 and have received a letter from n Power today advising of the new rates for gas and electricity.

I have done a quick calc and the total annual increase is in the region of 14%!!

Annual bills for Gas go from £697.51 to £771.62 an increase of 10% and electricity from £610.19 to £720.75 an increase of 18.1%!

I think a phone call to them is in order
