Help with iPod touch, BBC iplayer and iOS 4 please!

Hello,

I have an iPod touch - I think it is the 1st gen (I got it in 2007 and it is an 8GB one). I have been using it to watch BBC iplayer and it works well.

However, yesterday I connected my iPod to the computer to sync (hadn't done this for a while). Later on when I went to watch BBC iplayer via the iPod I got a message saying:

"Your phone is not supported. We have detected that you are using an old version of iOS, the Apple operating system. You need to update your device's operating system to use BBC iPlayer.

Please update your iPhone/iPod touch operating system by connecting it to a desktop computer and following the onscreen instructions in iTunes."

However, when I connect my iPod and check for updates there are none, it says my iPod is up to date and using the correct version.

I've since done some reading and am I right in thinking that my version of the iPod touch cannot support this new iOS?? Apple website is useless - no help available unless I want to pay, no e-mail contact unless it's to do with the iTunes store, and I cannot post to the Apple support forum as it won't let me login at the moment!

My question is why BBC iPlayer worked fine previously, as I was obviously using the old operating system then, but since I synced it now won't work?! Aargghh!!

What can I do? Thanks in advance! :)

what version are you running now? go to settings >general >about, the firmware will be listed there. (will be something like 1.x.x, 2.x.x, or 3.x.x)

you may be on a very old firmware but you most likely can be updated to something newer (just not the newest 4.x versions)

also can you confirm exactly which gen you have, is it this one? note the plactic around the edge of the screen and it has a flat back.

    Hello,

The version I have is 2.2.1. I think it is the very 1st iPod touch I have - 8GB, bought Dec 2007 and on the back, the black antennae cover bit in the top left corner is rectangular (not oval shaped) and there is no speaker or controls on the sides.

I'm not sure how to update firmware - whenever I connect it to my computer, iTunes gives me no options to update - it simply says I have the latest version.

Unfortunately the BBC quite often decide that poorer citizens should not be permitted to have access to their services. But since they are booting Mark Lamarr off the air there won't be anything worth listening to or watching anymore anyway.

So, it is a problem with the BBC and an update to iPlayer then, and not caused by me finally syncing my iPod after months?

yes they will have for some reason decided to not support it for older iOS versions, no idea why, hopefully updating to the new version will make it work.

Wonder how the UK license payer would react if BBC only broadcast TV signals that need proprietary (recent) American products in order to receive them.

I just had this exact problem.

As far as I can tell, the problem is the beeb are loons and have stopped the support to the '2.etc' os. As a fellow 1st gen itouch buyer, I cannot upgrade to the latest 4 os. but... (here's the good news), to watch iplayer, all you have to do is to upgrade to the 3.1 os which you can do by clicking here [ http:// support (dot) apple (dot) com/kb/HT2052 ] replace dot with a "."

I can't seem to put the link up which I suppose is quite sensible for spammer people. I've just done it and it all works.

    Hope that helps! :):santa2:

I have a first gen, running 3.1 no problems here.

As for upgrading the software it is done easily via itunes. Upon itunes loading up it always tells me upgrades to itunes software and my itouch firmware are available.

As for the Beeb not supporting v2 software, I don't see a problem in that. The software they use is being updated all the time, so why hold back some enhancements by trying to support years old software. The vast majority of users will be on V3 and above by now.

Even Apple don't want to bother anymore with 1st gen users when it comes to software updates, so it's not surprising others follow anyway.

Mind you I'm sticking with my 1st gen for as long as possible, still does what I want it to do.

only problem with that is (as far as I can see) there was no additional video codec support added to iOS3 over iOS2, so therefore if iplayer works on iOS3 it should work on iOS2 perfectly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_version_history

so what I can tell it is just the BBC being awkward and removing support for that specific useragent string
