No, strangely enough HMRC have no moral compunction about such matters. In fact as far as the sex trade is concerned, I recall that the old C&E once went to great lengths to collect VAT from an escort agency.
'agencies' are a bit different to individuals though ... where of course the difficulty is always to establish that you are working alone, and that no-one connected to you is living off immoral earnings.

Remember that prositution itself is not illegal. HMRC even have a helpful note on the matter at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/bim65001.htm, although sadly the text of EM2097 (being the HMRC manual on the subject) is not available to the public.

Questions have been asked in Parliament on the subject and the answer has been that the profits of the trade of prostitution are liable to income tax. Of course whether the individuals engaged in the trade actually take notice of such things is doubtful.

  • I wonder how many prostitutes file a self employed tax return lol.
The loopy one has gone :j

I'm well aware of that. but as I said, one thing - and there are many! - which puts individuals off is the need to ensure that no-one close to you can be 'done' for living off immoral earnings.

can't think where I read about the difficulties one woman had had registering for tax, possibly it was via a trade union site.
