AVG causing error reports after uninstall?

Please can anybody give me some advice on how to remove AVG completely?
I have been using AVG for years, but recently updated to the 2011 free version. All seemed well at first, but then it stopped updating the anti-virus conponent. Every time I tried to update, I got a 'failed' message.
After searching this forum, I decided to uninstall AVG and try Avast instead. However AVG hasn't completely gone. It's still in my search bar in internet explorer and when I try to open certain programs on the PC I keep getting a box pop up that tells me AVG has an error. I'm also getting these same boxes popping up and telling me the other programs that I'm trying to access have an error also - yet the programs' still open without any problems.
I know very little about computers, but as this has only started since I uninstalled AVG yesterday, I'm assuming it's AVG that's causing all these error reports?
Please could someone tell me what action to take to get rid of AVG completely, and also if there's anything else that I need to do to solve these problems? Thanks:)
PS I've just downloaded Malwarebytes and am in the middle of running a full scan, if that's any use?

Run AVG removal tool suitable for your system
AVG Remover(32bit) 2011
(avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1149.exe)
AVG Remover(64bit) 2011
(avg_remover_stf_x64_2011_1149.exe)0 -
It might be best if you uninstall avast, use the AVG removal tool. Run CCLEANERs registry cleaner, then reinstall AVAST:idea:0
