Hi.

My house is double glazed except for the front door (no idea why), which is draughty. What should I expect to pay for a double glazed door with fitting?

I've seen some on the net for £300 and in my local window shop the door that caught our eye was £2200 fitted!

Don't want cheep rubbish, but don't want to pay over the odds either!

thanks.

We ordered a composite front door, and the guys are finishing fitting it as we speak. We paid £600 for Rehau door, red on the outside, brown frame to match existing windows and white on the inside. It looks great, has very good insulation from what I can see and I really believe (and hope) that the house will be warmer compared with the single glazed door that we had.

I think you need to decide if you want wooden, uPVC or composite door. We went for composite, as they are supposed to be stronger and maintenance free.

  • I've had quote for upvc with a new frame for £450, this is through a family friend

  • I'm being charged £1200 plus VAT for a Hallmark composite door and frame which includes a glass panel above. This is marginally cheaper than similar doors (without the top panel) from local double glazing companies. £600 sounds a bargain!

    Hope

Well, the doors have been fitted on Friday, and look amazing. The door is Rehau composite, solid (we didn't want glass in the door as we have side window), red outside, white inside, frame is mahogany outside and white on the inside. The price included the handle, letterbox and knocker with the spyhole. £600

The kitchen door we went for fully glazed, again, Rehau. White inside, mahogany outside, the same for the frame. £500

And patio doors - tilt & slide, and you guessed it - Rehau again. White inside, mahogany outside. £1180

The company came recommended by someone from MSE, and it is called Class-plas. They are based south of Manchester if of use for anyone. They have travelled for us about 40 miles.

  • I work for a double glazing firm down in north london and you need to have an idea of what sort of door it is that you want. A standard UPVC door would start around £650 but depending on the type of panel you want that could rise (panels can be as expensive as £400 depending on how decorative, bevels, leads, crystal etc.)

    Coloured Upvc is more.
A composite door you are talking from £800 ish.

Be vary wary when looking at places like wickes, the doors are not great (they will do the minimum they can get away with, less insulation, less choice of glass, inferior materials). also they only supply in a few sizes. do not make the mistake of thinking you will make the opening fit the door (new lintels, redecorating, chopping the brickwork, lots of mess and potential complications). If it fits, fine but you will still need someone to ft it and that will take you to a normal cost of a door anyway.

Be cautious of the large companies as you do not get anything different (everything is normally the same standard but by using materials only for them they can state you can only get it from them)

Always get a few quotes, 3 or more. Ask friends for recommendations, and look at previous work.

See if you speak to the same couple of people each time, if the company has loads of employees you may end up passed from pillar to post if there are any complications.

    Hope this helps.
