  • Anyone know the model? I've had the HDRW 720 for a couple of years now, and as a system, I can't praise it highly enough. It can be made multi-regional. It has it's own (Guideplus) TV guide which you can use to record programs. But beware - not all sky boxes are compatible; the most notably incompatible one is the PACE 2600 (which I've got). Guideplus say they're working to make it compatible, but they've been saying that for a year now. The only thing that means is that if you're not compatible, then you MUST have an analogue connection to download the TV Guide - it comes off ITV analogue.

Having said all of which - it's fantastic, and I love it to bits. It changed the way I watched TV; and even two years down the line, Sky+ is still only playing catchup!

    HTH ;-)

I'm after a DVD HDD recorder. I've seen mixed reviews of the cheaper brands. Especially when it comes to noisy fans and also one thing i've noticed is that quite a few of the cheaper machines won't allow you to record to HDD and playback a DVD at the same time. I would imagine that could be quite annoying.

It's a bit more expensive but i'm looking to get one of these new model Toshiba RD-XS25's when they come out. It looks good and Tosh DVD HDD's get very good reviews.

I was after one that would copy my wedding video but then there's all this macrovision stuff to consider. Anyone know of any that will ignore this macrovision ?

The Philips that I've got simply seems to circumvent it. I've plugged a few old videos into it and copied across to the hard disk with no apparent problems. Don't know why, and it doesn't say anything in the manual, but it just worked. Maybe because it recommends you don't do scart to scart, but scart out of video and analogue plugs into the DVD recorder.

Get hold of a mate with a DVD recorder, and get him to coy it for you. If it's a wedding video, is it really likely that it's got macrovision? The kit ain't cheap, and I wouldn't have expected most wedding photographers to have it.

wedding videos won't have macrovision protection, you should be able to copy with any problems.

I'm also looking for a a Freeview HDD/DVD recorder at the lower end of the price scale. Couldn't find any at £150 ish, so will wait until they come down.
