Who can install my boiler controls?

Hello,

A few months ago, I bought a house. It used to belong to a plumber and central heating had been installed in February this year, with a nice, new condensing boiler.

My conveyancer went after the usual certificates to do with the house - windows, gas etc - I didn't see any copies of these until well after completion.

It turns out, the so called gas certification the conveyancer had got was a landlord gas safety certificate filled in by... yep, the plumber who lived there (and was definitely not a landlord).

To make things more interesting, the boiler, which seems to be installed fine, turned out to have no heating controls, timer, thermostat etc connected. The boiler manual etc is there, but no recorded details of the person who installed it - guess it was the previous occupier plumber, though.

I can buy the controls fairly cheaply from Screwfix, but who do I get to connect them - plumber? Electrician? Heating engineer? Will they be able to make things right with the lack of installation info in the manual/written on the boiler too?

Finally, any idea how much this job might cost?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

D

What boiler model is it? A combi needn't have any controls beyond those on the boiler itself.

I'm at work so can't check the exact model/make (I'll update when I get home) but it's a modern condensing boiler.

Control options on the boiler are: 'off', 'hot water on', or 'heating and hot water on'.

So basically I have to turn the dial to 'heating and hot water on' whenever I want the the radiators on and turn it back to 'hot water on' to switch 'em off again!

So I need to attach one of these:

I could probably do it myself, I'm just not sure if I should get someone to do it to see if they can do anything about the possibly unregistered original installation of the boiler!
  • You can easily install most thermostats yourself, but you need to make sure you get the right connections for your particular boiler. I did this a few months back, I also called my local council to ask about part p and they said that this job was not notifiable, so I went straight ahead and did it!

You might be able to get a wireless thermostat/controller that was designed for the boiler that may be easy to install.
