how thick is Artex usually? I only ask because overboarding and skimming will take a couple of inches off the height of a ceiling. Not a problem in period properties perhaps but a bleeding pain in newer houses with lower ceilings.
unless you are peter crouch then you should have no problem with newer houses , most ceilings are well over 7ft , and period properties tend not have artex
We have had all of the ceilings in our house skimmed over because of the Artex. Look loads better and done quickly, its made a real difference in our house.
White asbestos was part of Artex up to the mid 80's so anything applied in the last 30 years is OK. Before that date get a professional in to remove it.

I thought it was in the 70s but you could be right. Skimming it is still the quickest and cheapest solution.
Cheers
