Can you Get Carpet Underlay That Doesn't Disintegrate?

Having recently removed some old carpets that were in the house when I bought it, I found that the foam underlay had almost entirely disintegrated into a fine dust. The only places that were partially still foam where the very edges near the walls where there is almost no foot traffic. OK it was an old carpet, but the foam underlay in not really suitable for purpose if it becomes dust when people walk on it. Also it cant be healthy for all that fine rubber dust to be in the home, even if it is mostly trapped under the carpet.

I now want to install new carpets but want to get an underlay that is cushioning but a bit more hard wearing - is there such a thing, and where can I get it without paying a fortune?

Nothing lasts for ever. As you don't know when the underlay was originally fitted you can't say whether it lasts for a long time or not. I have had underlay that was 20 years old and had deteriorated very little as far as I could see.
I can afford anything that I want.

Ha ha opps don't know where that came from brain fart. Did they ever cover it LOL

Reminds me of a time I drunkenly said to a band nice cover of Shed 7 when they did Jumping Jack flash!!!

I am as bad as these clowns on X-Factor who think things like Leona Lewis wrote run.
  • I've just recarpeted and the underlay is totally different now. It's recycled materials and if you go for the more expensive option it has a lifetime guarantee.
As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.
  • Thanks for all your carpet-related help and also the Verve reference - 'The Rugs Don't Work, that foam's getting worse....'
