So it's time to get rid of the old car...

With having two children now and me being 6'3", I'm looking for something quite roomy, reliable and quite friendly on the MPG. I know nothing about cars, and we don't really use it often, neither my wife and I don't use it for work or anything.

I was looking at a Renault Scenic, but only for size and I don't know the MPG, but a friend says I should'nt buy Renault, but when I question why, he displays his deft knowledge by answering "they're rubbish". Everybody knows someone like this I suppose.

I don't want to buy one from new, but would like one less than three years old.

Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi jonnym,

You should get more help with this on the Motoring board, so I'll move your thread over there.

Given that I run a website specifically about new cars, I would suggest these cars:
'Budget': Ford S-Max / Skoda Roomster (looks a bit quirky, but nice car and just launched)
Higher End: Touran (though you don't get much discount out of these at the moment)

And, if you want to go easy on the fuel, I would definitely suggest Diesel (of course!).

Your friend is right, of course, about Renault; and I would lump any French or Italian make in the 'may have problems' category. Even the Far Eastern makes are more reliable.

It also depends on whether you want what's called a 'Mini MPV' (five seats, possibly seven with zero luggage space) or a 'proper' MPV. If you're looking at that end, then cars like the Chrysler Voyager are pretty substantial (avoid, at all costs, the Ford Galaxy and Renault Espace).

You can get a 06 big car for under £10K with a 3 year manuf warranty.

    eg 06 plate Mondeo 1.8LX 15600 miles for £7999

oh.. and French cars do not have the best track record for reliability and build quality...
( and yes I have owned 5 French cars in my time )

Renault cars are nicely styled (imo). However the service sucks and reliability isnt great.

S-Max always looks like a great car and good write-ups. Roomster wont be to everyone's tastes. Both should be reliable enough. Also maybe Honda (an FRV maybe?), or a Mazda 5?

Diesels are good but why worry about mpg if you dont do many miles? you should probably save the difference in money between a petrol and diesel and just get a fairly economical petrol, as you wont make your money back on the extra investment a diesel costs (unless you prefer the engines of course. Would imagine they have a bit more pull for sometihng bigger?)

Thanks for all the posts everyone...

John_M, would you be able to let me know the name of your website? If it's against the rules to post it here, could you PM it to me...I'd like to have a read if at all possible...

I think a full size MPV we wouldn't use, it's not really seats, more space. Quite like the look of the Ford though and will probably go out (without my wallet!) this weekend and have a look...

    Thanks again
  • IF you are not going to use the car that much then don't worry about getting a diesel. Also, a Ford would probably be the best in your circumstances as there are plenty around of most models so you don't need to spend a fortune and they will be relatively cheap to service.

    I don't think you'll find a secondhand S-Max for quite a while yet though.

Mpg and big "people carrier" wagon bus doesn't go together too well. Fuel economy is a function of the vehicle weight and size.
Two children plus two adults should fit into a conventional saloon or 4 door hatchback.
There are loads to choose from, personally I rate Nissan/Honda/Toyota for reliability over Peugot/Ford/Vauxhall etc.
