Should we as a couple stay away from a studio flat? Where we are looking studios are £500-£650 and 1 beds are usually £650-£700. My partner doesn't really want to go up as high as £700 but you get more for the money at £675+

We are moving in Jan all being good with ref's etc but we earn £1500-£1700 a month and have the usual bills on top.

Our area's are Chislehurst, Bromley & Mottingham due to our places of work

Are you sure you have looked on all the various sites for 1 bed flats. I live in Bromley and know it the areas you are looking at are probablly on the high side (pricewises) for what you get, but I have a quick look on findaproperty and this was the first thing I saw - 1 bed masionette - http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid=00&salerent=1&pid=7875904 - and this was just the first one I came across

Much better IMHO that a Studio.:)
  • Have you looked in the Eltham area too? We live in a 2 bed flat walking distance from the station and close to the A20 for only £750 a month. From what I've seen there's a few one bed flats around at under £700 a month. Its an ok town, we've not had any problems in the last 6 months here :p

It's really hard to say. I certainly think me and my boyfriend have done very well in a studio flat and the low costs have certainly been an advantage for us. We both have your approach to sleeping, though, I don't think it would work with light sleepers.

Most of our friends are amazed that we manage to live in harmony there and wouldn't dream of doing it themselves.

That said there is no way I would move into a shared house as a couple, much as I like living in shared housing, especially when I have been the landlord I found that hard on my previous relationship and harder still when the tenants were couples.

I would be happy to stay where we are for good, although I do have reservations if we had a baby. I think the less you spend on rent, the better for your relationship.

yes we have that in mind.

Fleur1104 we have considered Eltham, not a bad place at all.

My partner doesn't really want to go about £650.

Was just about to suggest Eltham too as used to live there and it's near to the other places you mentioned (and quite reasonable). But... I can't see how any of the places you mention are 'handy' for Croydon. Will your partner be driving? Have you any experience of driving to Croydon from SE London? I did it once from Eltham (not rush hour) and, never again. Took forever and the traffic was horrendous. Hated even driving to Bromley on a weekend. Can probably forget Chislehurst, it's very pricey! Where are you working then? In or near to one of the places you're looking to live? Not sure where you're living now. Do you need trains/buses or are you both driving?

He gets the bus or tram to croydon, journey about 1-1.30. Bus right through to Croydon from ours or change in Bromley. I work in Chislehurst and we live in Mottingham. He is waiting on a transfer to Bromley or Bluewater.
He used to drive to Croydon years ago.

We are actually considering moving back up to Nottingham as big 3 bed semis are only £500 or less. We just need to jobs.
