Import limits
As you will not have paid European duty on items bought outside the EU (and may not have even paid tax at all in some countries) you are liable to pay UK import duty on most items brought back with you. You do however have an allowance of items which you may import duty free provided they are for your own use. These are legal maximums not just guidelines so if you are bringing back more than this make sure you know how much duty you will need to pay and how to pay that duty.- 200 cigarettes; or
- 100 cigarillos; or
- 50 cigars; or
- 250gms of tobacco60cc/ml of perfume
- 2 litres of still table wine
- 250cc/ml of toilet water
- 1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume; or
- 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs
- £145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs.

Thanks to everyone for these tips!!!!!
Doing a bit of internet surfing around to make the most of my shopping time there and the make-up counters won't know what hit them!
Have found that the Walgreen sells 'Burts Bees' skincare stuff, which I've seen over here in House of Fraser (gift sets) for about 4 times as much - think Santa will be giving these to all the ladies in the family!!
All the best and thanks again. From Money Spending Expert  to Money Saving Expert0 -
A great time to shop in the us is the day after thanksgiving and they do some serious sales with fantastic reductions on nearly everything .0

Post some stuff home. Put a lowish value on the postage label and they are very rarely caught by customs - sometimes but more often than not they go through.
My brother lives in USA and if I want to buy anything I get him to buy it, and he posts it to me as a gift with a value of $25. Haven't had a problem so far. Oh....damn - I do have to pay him back through a bank transfer!0 -
Gap is a lot cheaper in the US.0

Sephora cosmetics is awesome and cheap compared to the UK, and the underwear in Victoria's secret is also lovely. I buy a lot of clothes from American Eagle - its like a US equivalent of topshop/river island etc and is way cheaper, and the quality is suprisingly good too.

I'm with JW....Sephora......My fave place to shop.....it's so cheap for cosmetics/perfume etc...benefit and stila are really good value. If you shop in Macy's (another fave) go to the customer service desk and get a tourist discount card. you get 13% (I think) off. Also o their holidays they tend to have big sales everywhere, so look out for those. Don't bother with DVD's as you can get them cheaper here, although you may get new releases that aren't out here yet. Some one mentioned cliniue...you wont believe how cheap it is with the exchange rate it's about half the price of here.
Have a fab time!0 -
