you shouldn't lay ceramic tiles directly onto floorboards. if you want to fit ceramic tiles ensure all your floorboards are securely fastened down then lay 4-6mm plywood over the top screwing to the floorboards every 10cm, over the whole floor. you can then lay your tiles but you should use a flexible adhesive to avoid cracking
this is how i have done my kitchen floor and it has been fine0 -

My husband wants to tile our bathroom floor but I thought you couldn't put ceramic tiles on floorboards. Does anyone know please?
Its a lot easier to use the laminate that looks like tiles
These days if its well fitted it is very convincing and no problems with cracking due to floor board movements.0 -
I've used Karndean in both bathroom and kitchen, still laid on 1/4 ply in the bathroom as its a wood floor. Superb job and easy to keep clean. And 1/2 the price of Amteka. Check out there web site. The kitchen one is a blue denim effect and really looks like floorboards.0

Ceramic tiles are great -look good and easy to clean, we have them in our porch and cloakroom. They've been down three years and look new. But ... they are slippery when wet and cold for bare feet.0

...and anything you drop on them instantly smashes! :eek:If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...0 -

Hi,
Just a thought but I'm about to lay ceramics on floorboards and I found the adhesive to be around £50.00 a tub (Enough for 4 Mtrs).
Popped into Wickes and bought it for about £20.00.

Theyr'e very good quality vinyl and both have web sites ( not sure how to do the links). Amteka is the bees knees, but tends to cost around £50 psm. Both are designed for heavy traffic so won't wear out in your house. Great for kitchens, bathrooms etc, but, as before, if laid on a timber floor you need to lay 1/4 ply or hardboard first.0 -
Thanks for the info PA0

just buy some 6mm plywood for about £10 a 1.2mx2.4m (6"x8") sheet from a local timber merchants and a big bag of 1" ringshank nails and cover the floor boards. it doesnt have to be perfect at all, the tiles can carry small gaps no bother. a good tip if you have lino down in the first place is to cut it, whilst still on the floor, into smaller 1m squared sections then use these as a template to draw around directly onto your plywood. this makes it very easy to get sizes and shapes very acurately without having to measure up which in turn makes it very quick to do. once sheeted hammer in the ring shanks every 6" or about 12cm and then a few more here and there for luck lol
voila one bathroom ready to be tiled. in total it took me about 1 1/2 hours for 3m squared from start to finish and im not a good joiner at all0
