The first thing you should do is disconnect from the internet and run a full virus scan.
Then try Start->Run->SFC /scannow
Then have a look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310560
If all of this doesn't work post back.0 -
I have the identical error (and then the soundcard fails) all of a sudden on my lappy, after it was not used for 3 weeks. MS site seems to suggest this may be caused by a previous MS update and would be fixed with the latest updates.
A few minutes after starting Windows XP this error pops up:
Generic Host Process for win32 services has encountered a problem.
error details: svchost.exe version 5.1.2600.2180
And after this error the sound no longer works and clicking on the sound properties icon brings up the error that no sound card is installed. The sound is OK until the above error occurs.
Looked at MS support page which suggested applying 1 patch - did this, rebooted, error is the same.
Decided to look at Add/Remove programs to see the MS patch history. In clicking on Add/Remove Programs immediately get the error: Run DLL as an APP has encountered a Problem. Details: rundl32.exe ver 5.1.2600.2180.
If I get in early enough after Windows starts I CAN see the installed programs. Noticed that the latest MS Patch was around Dec. 12th, while another PC I access has patches as late as 20th/21st Dec.
MS Support Site tells to visit the Windows Update page. On doing this it just gets stuck at the "Checking for the Latest Updates" message. Even left it all night, still stuck waiting. Additionally I checked and set the automatic updates time to be when the laptop was switched on and waiting. Still not solved.
Anyway I'm going to try Mr Squiddy's advice above and see how it goes.0 -
OK, did the Run->SFC /scannow - it did not seem to find or do anything after a longish scan. By coincidence at around the same time AVG flagged up shell32.dll in sysem32 folder and hosts in system32\drivers\etc as having changed. But after a reboot, still sound card is missing and can't do a add/remove programs.0
