I would chose York, but Newcastle has great night life/shopping (I live here). Winter time is obviously a factor.

You need to go through this link it's only certain times and it's probably only certain dates too. I'm booked from Dundee to London on the 11th of Feb and back on the 14th for £8 each way. Might be worth being flexible with your dates if you want the cheaper travel.
For instance: if you want to travel on 20th January then it's £8 for the 09.06 or 11.06 train down and coming back a week later it's £8 to come back on the 10.30 train.
Once you've put in your dates it brings up the prices at the top. Click on the 'single £8' tab and it'll bring up what times you can go for that price. Hope that helps

Are you going through the bit that says:
Click through the links in this page and enter your journey details into our booking engine. Where available, the special £8 fare will appear as 'EC Flat Fare' in your search results.
Does it work if you go through here (I've just put in the dates I did before) the £8 tab is under the word FARES.•
