Flip Ultra HD 3rd Generation

Options
Hi- just looking for some advice for a Xmas present. I want to buy my other half a cheapish camcorder as we are expecting our first baby. At the moment he only has an iPhone that he uses for the odd little video clip of our dogs. I have a Lumix G1 camera but it doesn't have video on it.

I have been looking at getting him a Flip camera- easy to use, cheap, etc... The newest one seems to be the 3rd generation one although a big problem with this is that none of the accessories for the previous ones fit it and the 3rd generation accessories haven't been released yet (it takes a micro hdmi cable instead of the usual mini cable and the waterproof case that enables you take underwater video is not compatible yet either)

The main difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation model seems to be the good new anti-shake system on the new one. Has anyone any idea when accessories will be released for this version? Or does anyone highly recommend any other sort of no-fuss hand held camcorder instead?

Thanks xxxxx

depends if he has an iphone 4 that that already does HD video, and afaik it is slightly better quality than the flip HDs. just be sure to hold it horizontal as vertical 99% of the time looks silly.

just depends if you are looking for something less 'pricey' than an iphone, I think a flip should be good, though I'm no expert on camcorders

you can watch this from the gadget show, may help
  • No idea when the accessories for 3rd Gen are coming but I would recommend you seriously consider the 2nd Gen... I've bought 4 over the last 6 months as everyone who sees it wants one and loves the idea that if they run out of charge while they're out and about they can just stick two AA batteries in it! The new 3rd Gen have different battery set-ups. The image stabilisation might be better for if you're doing lots of long scenes with a lot of movement but for the average clip here and there I don't see it justifying the much increased price tag :D
  • Thanks for your replies. I will have another look at the 2nd generation one too- it just seems a bit strange buying an older version of something! :undecided

  • Hmmm that Gadget Show clip seemed to favour the Kodak Playsport Zx3! Has anyone got one of those? I do like the fact it's waterproof...
