Can anyone advise on Sat Nav?

Hi

My daughter is thinking of buying a sat nav system for her car - there seems to be a real price difference some for £99.00 and some for over £200.00.

Please can anyone advise us on a good system at a reasonable price?

Many thanks
Wendy

We opted for a HP Ipaq PDA, with Tom Tom software and it is great as there is more than one use ie a dedicated Sat Nav.

The PDA's can be bought at a reasonable price from eBay.

http://www.totalpda.co.uk/xhandheld.asp this place sells the PDA's and the GPS too.

    Hope this helps.

TomTom can still charge the premium, being the market leader;' but you get the add-ins for traffic-jam alerting etc. Plus, it's got the best support with gazetteers of speed-scamera locations.

How do you get the traffic alerts/speed camera data for a Tom Tom? Can you download any off the net for free?
How up-to-date is the traffic info?

The traffic info is up-to-date as TT phones home using your mobile to get traffic info.

You can get speed camera info for £2 here - http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/subscription.php. It's free for life if you upload a new camera location :)

    Hello,

I have several sat nav units, started off with a Navman and now have a Tom Tom software via an Hp ipaq. I would recommend Tom Tom as the mapping software is fantastic.

Take a look at https://www.ebuyer.com or https://www.dabs.com to find a deal.
  • Hi
Thank you for the advice, I think she'd really like the PDA option - it sounds a really good idea!

We'll look into it over the weekend, is the HP IPAQ the one to go for and does it come complete with satnav soft ware?

    Thanks for your help

I went for a dell axim as it was much cheaper the HP Ipaq but the Ipaq is (in my opinion) a better bit of kit.

Apart from some install problems on the axim (which I got round with some guides from various forums) it works pretty well.

I'd go for a PDA solution every time over a dedicated tomtom unless you are doing loads & loads of driving like a sales rep or something. mind you if you were a sales rep you'd probably want a PDA anyway!

    good luck,
    worto.

tom tom gets my vote - got it running on both dell axim and my mobile phone (nokia 6630) - different versions but use same bluetooth gps receiver - excellent ( previously had navteq software from dell and it was useless)
