Just a few points to clear up for all who view the thread. Most crucially, the colour of taxi plates. It is GREEN plates who are only allowed to pick up pre-booked jobs, WHITE plates are allowed to pick up anyone without booking outside Belfast, and YELLOW plates are public hire and can therefore lift anyone off the street, though I know I'd avoid yellow plated black taxis at every opportunity, as many of them, at night time at least, don't have proper insurance, PSV standard vehicles, and can be guilty of overcharging.
With regards ValueCAB starting fare of 2.40 having risen to 3.00, this is known as WAITING TIME. If you have yet to pay your bill and are still finishing a drink at the table while the taxi has arrived, you are on his time I'm afraid. Otherwise, book the cab for 10 mins time. Having said this, since ValueCABS introduced their 2.40 fare, the mileage at which this increases was reduced from 0.7 mile to 0.2 mile, and the waiting time starts earlier, thus, actually marginally increasing some fares.
THE FONACAB DISCOUNT SCHEME- Some drivers did react badly to it, and SOME customers sympathised, owing to the fact that the driver took the hit for the reduction in fare and no-one else, for SIX MONTHS. And finally YES THE DISCOUNT CARDS WERE NO LONGER VALID FROM 30TH NOV. No expiry date was on the cards themselves although the terms and conditions on fonacabs website stated they reserved the right to be withdrawn at any time, and in any case, 6 months was enough for any driver in the lead up to Christmas with fuel prices rocketing.
There are good and bad drivers, just as there are good and bad customers, and for the most part, we all get on just fine, with the odd exception taken between us every now and again.....:beer:0 -

Whilst I am, of course, sympathetic, I don't see how it is relevant where the child came from. Teenagers from affluent backgrounds can get into trouble just the same as children from less affluent backgrounds. I'm not from Sandy Row, nor do I know anyone there, but I would hesitate to assume that this teenager came from there simply on the basis that he mugged someone.
Hmmm - I must say my reading of this way somewhat different. I just assumed the mention of Sandy Row was a reference to the direction the spide ran when he snatched the bag. Could have easily been any other area but just happened to be Sandy Row.Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

Agree with the advice re waiting time - we only book taxis if we are finished whatever we're doing and sitting ready to go!
Also, I didn't realise that the FC cards had expired! I usually use one of the smaller local ones (always cheaper), mind you I only take a taxi a few times a year! :money:
And I never use black cabs if I can help it. :eek::eek::eek::eek:Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

Hi TARA747. Can I just apologise also about your experience with the discount card. As a driver, I felt awful about the tension placed between us and our customers by the management of the firm. The drivers knew that it would impact upon relations between them and customers, but it was hard to not let 8 or 9 dicount cards per shift get to you a bit. I had 6 in a row on a SATURDAY night, one of which lost me £8.00 on a SINGLE fare. I do recognise that we are slightly more expensive than local firms, and I too use local firms locally, but when I am in town on a busy night there is only one firm I will use, I know they will pick me up and I KNOW exactly what their fare structure is before I get in. Never hale an unmarked taxi, you WILL PAY FOR IT. We do also have slightly higher fares for a simple reason. We have by far in a way larger overheads. We pay £125 per week rent, and all our vehicles are under 5 years of age.
In real terms come the end of the week, we earn no more than a local driver, but I personally like the fact that I don't pick up the same person 3 times a day from my own area who knows all my business hahaha.:T0
