Help on cancelling holiday

I am asking this on behalf of a friend of mine, She is booked to go abroad next year, booking was made through Co-op Travel earlier this year, holiday is June '11.
There are 2 travelling and both have paid the deposit with one of them paying near enough all her holiday off, now my friend has come to a situation where it just won't be possible for her to go.
What happens now? AFAIK none of them have taken out travel insurance yet, my friend is the lead name and has told the other girl who is noe too happy, do they lose the deposit and all the cash that has been paid already.
Not much info available on Coop website

They will lose the deposits.
If any extra has been paid then that is probably refundable.
And it doesn't sound as though insurance would have helped anyway - disinclination to travel never is0 -
your probably best off treying to find someojne else to take her place and sell the booking on.0

Depending on who the operator is ie Thomas Cook, Thomsons etc depends on when the booking goes into canx charges Tcook is 10 weeks so your friend doesn't need to officially do anything until then but the travel agent will have asked for the balance 14 weeks before so you will need to tell them whats happening when it gets to the 14 weeks but you do officially have another 4 weeks before the travel agent can canx it without your sayso. So lets say the balance isnt due until march/april time i wouldnt do anything until then cause she could win the lottery or anything before then. But the other options are a name change if its a package normally about £30-£40 or if its canx then you both lose your deposits and the person who's paid more would get the extra back. Bit of a tricky one this one with the person who is the lead passenger is the one who has all the rights to say what happens so i can understand why the other girl is fed up, best thing she can do is get someone to go in your friends place and depending on how kind they are she may get some of her deposit back.0

The friend is the lead name, it is The Co-operative travel not Co-op travel, some more info is that the holiday is due to be paid in full by 27th feb '11, with it being fairly close the other girl is not having any luck with finding anyone else.
So the bottom line is they both lose their deposits but get whatever else has been paid, can the deposit money off the cancelled holiday be put on another holiday?0 -

Hi the Co-operative travel is the travel agent not the tour operator, they have bought the hol from the coop who have bought it off someone else either thomas cook, thomsons, 1st choice, cosmos etc. The coop will want the money on the 27th but it probably wont be really due until nearer the end of march. Have they booked in a shop or on the net or telephone, if its in a shop it will be easier to sort than telephone or net. Yes they lose their deposits and get the excess back but its possible they could change the date to later in the year they need to ask the travel agent for all the scenarios.0
