Fan Heater & Smoke?

Ok Ive just got back from town after buying a fan heater from Argos (only the cheapy one). I literally had it on for about a minute and its set my smoke alarm off! Doesn't seem smoky but it does smell a lot like burning plastic - not sure if thats just cos its new or not - help!
