Accident

I had an accident on Sunday. The guy did not want to stop at the time and finally stopped miles down the road. He laughed at the damage to my car (scraped down all side panels and now noticed cracked headlamp). He was not English and didn't seem clued on the idea of stopping at the scene of an accident. He finally gave me his name (initial and surname), his address and a telephone number. There was no damage to his 'tank'

I have checked on the DVLA website and his car is a different colour on their systems. He does have car tax though. He was unable to provide the name of his insurance company at the scene, and provided a dead telephone number. I managed to find his full name off the electoral roll along with another 'dead' telephone number.

I'm fuming because I cannot afford to claim off my insurance as I don't want to lose my no claims. I am getting a quote soon hopefully.

What should I do now?

I assume you have his vehicle registration.... you can firstly reporting him to the police now for failing to exchange details correctly. Alternatively you can phone your insurers and ask if they can tell you who his insurance company is (they can do it by the vehicle reg and date of loss) - I do not know what the data protection says about them giving this info out if you are not registering a claim but if you dont ask you dont get.

Alternatively you could also attempt asking the Motor Insurers Bureau (sp) who also have access to the MID database that the police and insurers have (again I cant say if they can just give it out over the phone)

I would do as the previous poster says and get in touch with the police and explain the situation - they should be able to do something. If there is damage to your car you will be claiming through the insurance company wont you? I would therefore also speak to the insurance company and see what they can say or do.

  • Assuming the accident wasn't your fault, go through your insurers. That's what you pay them for.
However, if you've no witnesses it could get a bit smelly.

You shouldn't loose you no claims discount, but you could check with them first.
